Etiquette: Part One

I’ve been updating my website, and today I finally was able to add some long-awaited information on wedding invitation etiquette. This will be the first post in a series of  three.

This first post is about ordering and mailing (addressing will be next). You can see this information here as well.

Wedding invitation etiquette, while not as strict as in the past, still applies to today’s modern bride and groom. Here are some helpful hints to consider when ordering and mailing your wedding invitations.

  • Once you know your date, you should start considering your invitation. There are so many styles to choose, and places to purchase from that before you know it, your head will be spinning! The main rule here is that your invitation is the first line of communication between you and your guests, so you need to make sure they set the right tone. Whether your wedding is going to be a fun day at the beach or a formal church affair with black tie dinner, you need to let your guests know what to expect. That’s the job of the invitation. If you’re unsure how to convey the proper tone of your wedding, speak to a professional!
  • Your invitations should be mailed 4-6 weeks from your wedding date. If you are having a lot of out-of-town (or international) guests, a destination wedding, or are getting married on a holiday weekend, please consider sending save the dates.
  • Save the dates can be as simple as a card with the date and your names, and should be mailed out 6-12 months before your date. You can also include a wedding website URL (there are tons of free ones out there that are easy to set up) to give your guests an extra heads-up on accommodations.
  • You should always send an invitation to your family and attendants. Even though they probably know every detail of your wedding, it is still considered appropriate to mail them an invitation. Besides, they will definitely want a keepsake from your wedding!
  • A wedding invitation really only needs three elements: the invitation, the response card (which can be a postcard or have its own envelope), and the outer envelope.
  • Consider adding information cards to your invitation suite to let your guests know about your reception, directions to the appropriate places, hotel accommodation information, and other weekend events planned. Even if you have a wedding website with this information, at the very least your reception information and website URL can be included on a separate card.
  • The inner/outer envelope is a thing of the past! There are still ways to include the same elements without using an inner envelope; consider using a paper band wrap or seal on which your guest names can be printed. This can then envelope or enclose your invitation.
  • Next in our series will be a helpful guide to wording your invitation, but to state it simply — an invitation needs to clearly and concisely include the key details for your guest. Who, what, where, and when. The Why is implied!

Real Weddings: Amanda + Todd

In my showroom, I have some of my past work for clients on display. It’s a great way for future clients to see samples of my work and my style, but also to get ideas for their own events.

That was the case for Amanda.  She saw an invitation for a wedding I did in 2010 and liked it so much, she just wanted the paper colors changed to coordinate to her wedding colors. This invitation is popular with brides, and actually, I’m currently working with another bride on a version of this invitation!

I met with Amanda when I was just under 4 weeks until my due date and she was 9 weeks out from her wedding so time was running short! But since she knew exactly what she wanted, it wasn’t a problem. Although I was slightly worried I’d go into early labor, I didn’t and she picked up her invitations 3 days before my scheduled c-section. (I did go into labor, but it was actually on the day I was scheduled to have my son. He was meant to be born on April 20th! LOL)

The original 2010 invitation uses paper from a supplier that I no longer utilize, but here it is, along with the program and place card:

Elizabeth + Logan

Amanda and I chose papers that coordinated with her bridesmaid dresses. We also chose a different font for the monogram and names. Here is Amanda + Todd’s invitation:

Amanda + Todd

Paper: Envelopments Peacock layer, White Micah BRO01 layer, and White Micah printed pieces.
Black satin ribbon.

Pricing (one of the most popular questions I get!) for this invitation suite was $5.40 each. But of course, any variation in papers and graphics can change the price higher or lower.

She also ordered a ceremony program. This is one of my more popular programs; it’s just a 5×7″ card stock with printing on both sides. Hers was printed on White Micah – one of the most popular papers I use.

Ceremony Program

These programs are great. Not only are they affordable (I currently charge $1.50 each for something like this), but they can be coordinated with your invitation and other stationery by using the same fonts and any graphics. In this case, we used the same monogram and fonts, which really added that personal touch.

So, there you have it! A real wedding, with real info on pricing and papers. I hope this helps you when you are shopping for your invitations!

Please note, all prices subject to change. All paper and embellishment subject to availability.
